The Maserati 3500 GT is a fantastic car and was also a big success at the time. After the 3500 GT, Maserati assigned Pietro Frua the task of creating a new design for the Tipo 109 chassis, with the bodywork to be built by Maggiora. The new two-seater coupe was named Mistral, inspired by the cold north wind of Southern France. In retrospect, the Mistral was the last Maserati powered by the six-cylinder engine descended from the 350S of the 1950s. What is quite interesting is the fact this engine was closely related to the Maserati 250F Formula 1.

Maserati introduced the Mistral in Turin, Italy, in 1963. Throughout its lifespan, the Mistral underwent only minor changes and remained in production until 1970. During production, the engine was enlarged from 3.5 to 3.7 litres, and later even to 4.0 litres. A Salisbury rear axle was driven through a ZF five-speed gearbox, which was a typical Maserati drivetrain combination.

The Mistral had several strong points. For example, this Maserati offered an excellent seating position. In total, only 828 Coupés and 125 open Spiders were built. The Coupé had the true GT feel and offered the owner a delightful combination of sporty driving and practical usability. All of this makes for a very enjoyable driver’s car. With a then-cost of nearly $15,000, you knew it was exclusive in the same class of Ferraris of that time.

The car we have on offer is a Mistral Coupé with the sought-after 4.0 six-cylinder engine with 255 hp, combined with a five-speed gearbox. In total, Maserati built fewer than 850 Mistral Coupés. Maserati supplied the Mistral with Lucas injection, disc brakes, and a five-speed gearbox.

Our car is an original European model, which was restored and mechanically overhauled several years ago. With the help of the included Maserati Classiche certification, we are able to confirm this is a matching number specimen, including the matching colours as this Mistral left the factory in 1966.

The overall condition of the car is neat. This Maserati has a solid body with correctly aligned fittings, and the paintwork, Argento Auteuil, is well maintained. The interior features black Connolly leather upholstery, tinted glass all around, and Borrani chrome wire wheels. Due to the overhaul work, this Maserati is mechanically sound, and driving it offers the delightful combination of the GT feel and a sensational driving experience with the great 4.0-litre engine and a manual five-speed gearbox.
