This 1920s Lancia Lambda was far ahead of its time—truly one of the most advanced automobiles of that era. Vincenzo Lancia, founder of this legendary marque, had been building cars since 1906, always focusing on a unique blend of sportiness, refined road manners, lightweight construction, durable materials, and innovative technology which was very different compared to other brands. The Lambda was Lancia’s most pioneering model up to that point, and paved the way for many subsequent models.
*Exceptionally Rare Albany Coachwork*
Here we have an 8th series Lambda from 1928. In characteristic Lancia fashion, each new series introduced various improvements to the model. This example is matching numbers and is fully eligible for the Mille Miglia. As was typical with Lancia, different coach builders could be chosen. This particular car wears a body by the Albany Carriage Co., to which Lancia supplied a short-wheelbase chassis on July 14, 1928. Thanks to its shorter chassis, in our opinion, the Lambda’s legendary handling is showcased even better. According to available records, Albany built only eight of these, and it’s believed this may be the only surviving example in the world.
*A Unique History*
Tracing its documented history back to the 1960s, this Lambda was sold in England to an enthusiast who, in 1982, commissioned a thorough restoration. Remarkably, this Lambda has remained in the same family ever since—when the owner passed away, it went to his son, and it eventually changed hands again in 2016.
*Beautiful Bodywork and Interior with Exquisite Patina*
The body is elegantly finished in a soft gray with a striking red leather interior. The doors close with the typical precision you’d expect from a Lancia, and the gorgeous Jaeger gauges are correct and look phenomenal. The original steering wheel feels wonderful in your hands, and the steering is impressively precise. We can’t get enough of the upholstery, which has developed the kind of patina that nearly defies description. One look at the upholstery shows just how beautifully it has aged. The chassis is in good condition—take a look at the underside photos for an impression.
*V4 Engine and Sliding Pillar Front Suspension*
We can’t emphasize enough how well a Lancia of this caliber drives, and this Lambda is no exception. Road imperfections are beautifully absorbed by the sliding pillar front suspension, and the matching numbers V4 engine runs strongly, producing that distinctive “Lancia sound” reminiscent of later models like the Augusta, Aprilia, Appia, and even the Fulvia. True aficionados know that sound well, a genuine source of goosebumps! It goes without saying that this Lancia, with its rare coachwork and unique history, is not only a contender for concourse events but also a thoroughly enjoyable driver.
*The Introduction of the Legendary Lambda*
In 1922, Lancia unveiled this revolutionary car, featuring what was then a compact V4 engine, independent front suspension—known to Lancia as the sliding pillar—and a monocoque chassis. By carefully selecting materials and employing forward-thinking engineering, Lancia created a car with a rigid body and outstanding handling. You’ll be amazed at how well a 1920s automobile can drive; it’s no coincidence that personalities like Anthony Fokker, the Dutch aviation pioneer, chose to drive a Lancia Lambda.
