Following the considerable success of the MG ‘M’ Type Midget, which had been introduced late in 1928, it had become clear that a new model was needed to fit between the Midget and the large ‘18/80’ models. This was to be a light 6 cylinder car, the ‘F1’ Magna which made its debut in September 1931, powered by a slightly modified version of the 1.3 litre Wolseley Hornet engine. This new 4 seater sports tourer was very much like the 4 seater ‘D’ Type version of the Midget, however, the longer wheelbase (7’ 10”) chassis and sloping radiator endowed the new Magna with a purposeful and very rakish appearance. The 6 cylinder power unit ensured smooth performance and the level of finish and equipment certainly befitted a car of this type. A top speed of 72 mph was achieved when the car was road tested by the press. Some 1250 F1 models were built before production ceased to make way for its successor, the 1100cc ‘L’ Type Magna in 1933. In addition to the standard Tourer body, a ’Salonette’ was also offered – this being a close-coupled and attractive fixed head variant. A number of specialist coachbuilders also produced bodies for the ‘F1’ and the touring version offered by MG distributors Jarvis Of Wimbledon was certainly amongst the most appealing. It is one such example that we present here, which is understood to be one of just three known to survive with this coachwork. The car was the subject of a rebuild from the bare chassis carried out between 2005 and 2012. The work is shown in detailed photographs supplied in the comprehensive file of documentation. The engine has recently been rebuilt by a well respected ‘MMM’ MG guru and the car drives very well indeed. The weather equipment is all in very good order, including the tonneau cover, whilst a slightly enlarged fuel tank is ideal for longer distance touring and events.
